Sea air, scones, and a few days to myself at the holiday home

By Dennis Medalla, Support Worker, The Grafton.

A great thing about working at Wellgate is that we can use the holiday home on the North Coast for free. Everyone needs a break now and then, whether it’s from work or just the usual daily routine.

I decided to put in a request and booked a few nights for myself. The only downside was that my kids were in school during the dates I could go, so I went alone. It was just me, my books, and the Norfolk Coast.

When I arrived, I stepped into a lovely cottage-style place that instantly felt relaxing. The bedrooms were warm, cosy, and spacious with en-suites, and there was an open kitchen and a comfy living room. I loved it.

The closest supermarket was just a ten-minute bus ride away, so getting groceries was easy. After a great first night’s sleep, I woke up feeling rested. That feeling alone made the trip worthwhile.

The next day, I visited the nearby coastal nature reserve. I found a café, ordered a hot chocolate and a homemade fruit scone with Cornish cream and jam, and decided it was the perfect morning. Chatting with other people at the cafe made the experience even nicer.

The following day, I went to the next town to explore. The weather was bright and perfect for a walk along the coast. I sat by the sea, enjoyed the breeze, and took some time to feel grateful for what I have and what I hope for. Not bad for a Tuesday.

That evening back at the house, I cooked dinner, which I really enjoy. Spending time in the kitchen and making something with care always feels restorative to me. After dinner, I read a good book and went to bed early. Pure bliss.

On my last full day, I chose to stay in. I listened to music, read, did some yoga and bodyweight exercises (callisthenics), made a cooked breakfast, and had no urgent tasks. It was the kind of peaceful, quiet day that really reminds you what rest feels like.

If you haven’t booked the holiday home yet, I want you to know it’s worth it, even if you go alone. Check out the calendar on the homepage or the Benefits and Holiday Home page, and request your preferred dates before they fill up.
